I get a particularly nasty one for me – whenever I have a cold it sounds as if there is a beehive in my ears. A varying buzzing hum that drones on for hours but can suddenly get louder without warning.

Bearing in mind I am massively phobic of buzzing insects anywhere near my ears, I have been known to suddenly try running away from my own ears, thinking there must be a wasp or something flying around my head. When there wasn’t.

You try explaining that one to one of your lecturers at university!

I get ‘lawnmower’ tinnitus!! Sounds like a ‘lawnmower’ going off in my ears

Mine is a whistle. Mostly I can ignore it. But if it does play up it is loud. Loud that you feel you have to talk over it.

Steam train – interesting, I don’t get that one! I’ll add it to my list.

I think the Test card is similar to my foghorn, but the higher pitched one?

I get tinnitus too! The one I get that you haven’t mentioned is the steam train! Another one I used to call the test card but with 24 hour tv we don’t get that any more: it’s a continuous montone whistle, arrives suddenly and fades out after a minute or so.
Sometimes I’ve found it quite comforting listening to the sounds in my ears when I can’t get off to sleep.
